Single member district refers to a case when a single individual is elected from a particular district to the Congress. There are a number of variations of the single member district system itself, however, the most simple is the one in which the person who gets more votes than the other candidates automatically is declared elected. Proponents of this system argue that such a system creates a strong liaison between the candidate and his constituency and hence provide for greater accountability.
